Blues Nocturnes For Baritone Guitar is now available via Bandcamp. It's an album of solo blues guitar instrumentals in the spirit of the Nocturne, that was invented by Irish composer John Field in the early 1800's and perfected by Frederic Chopin.

These Blues Nocturnes are a soundtrack for your night, whether you're working on a project, driving, going to sleep or watching the stars. The influences of Frederic Chopin and bluesman Junior Kimbrough were conjured during these recordings.

The first 5 of the 7 Nocturnes flow in the cycle of fourths, BEADG. The last two end with slide in B & E. This key flow creates a constant forward movement and then flows back.

They are available through bandcamp. Link below.

Sonic soundscapes incorporating Frippertronics and Ligeti Sonic Nets.

What are Frippertronics? It's a delay style coined by Robert Fripp and was invented by composer Terry Riley. It originally had two tape decks linked together to create a record and playback delay of about 6-8seconds long. The original loops would fade away. I used a Pigtronix Infinity 2 Looper to mimic that kind of tape delay. The Infinity 2 has a decay knob in which loops fade away while recording. It's pretty awesome as the music constantly morphs and evolves.

Another big influence for this album is composer Gyorgy Ligeti. Ligeti created sonic nets with instruments playing note clusters at various rhythms and microtonal pitches. Check out his composition Atmospheres.

I used a fretless, sustainer guitar, specifically a Hamer Sustainiac from the 1990's. The music is composed in 72ET, 72 notes to an octave. The fretless guitar gives me the ability to play those notes and I also used a slide. The system of 72ET I used was invented by Boston composer Ezra Sims. It was taught to me by Joseph Gabriel Maneri at New England Conservatory in the late 1980"s.

The album is called Corruption, Deceit, Murder. It contains eight compositions which ends with the nineteen minute title track. The guitars used on the album are a Loar LH-300 Archtop and a National M1 Tricone Baritone Resonator. All tracks were recorded live and without overdubs.

Joe Sweeney from The Mainer reviewed and stated, "Corruption, Deceit, Murder is another showcase for his signature sound - rumbling bass lines anchoring intricate tenor melodies that wax and wane like a Harvest Moon, aglow with organic elegance. Fat Knuckle Freddy has slayed the misconception that one musician can only do so much."

"He shifts between the warmth of his finger-picking and the metallic wail of his slide, while using the baritone’s deep lows to frame every trip up the neck as a remarkably expressive journey. It’s just him, the whole time, yet Hitchcock is as rich and nuanced as a full-band effort.

On 9/1/18, Feels Like Media filmed FKF and drummer Timothy "BB" Webber live, on the patio, at Amigos, Portland, ME. This was a long time coming and FLM captured the chaotic raw energy of our performance. There's a total of five videos. "No Love" is on the website, YouTube and Facebook. FKF is playing a fretless slide guitar, with an octave bass string. Fretless slide cigar box guitar. Fretted slide baritone cigar box guitar. Shovelcaster aka 3 string slide shovel guitar. And fretless slide cigar box guitar with octave bass string.

What is a fretless slide guitar with an octave bass string? I'm glad you asked. FKF doubles his low guitar string, with a bass string an octave lower, so it thickens the sound and gives the illusion of a bass player in a duo format. So, check out "No Love" , subscribe to FKF's Youtube page (link on website) and be ready for the next video release.

Also, FKF just finished recording his solo American Primitive tour de force. Over 60 minutes of solo acoustic guitar music on a National M1 Tricone Baritone Guitar. The most haunting and beautiful guitar in the world. This has been a work in progress for a very long time. Sample videos will be released on instagram. CD Release some time in the new year.

Fat Knuckle Freddytag:www.fatknucklefreddy.com,2005:Post/50350602018-01-21T08:47:42-05:002022-02-17T10:54:54-05:00BONES- New EP!
On 1/20/18, I recorded and released BONES, instrumental music for fretless 3 string guitar in 72et. What’s 72et? It stands for 72 equal temperament, meaning 72 notes to the octave, 6 notes to a half step. The 12 standard notes are still present. Why do this? Because it gives me the ability to tune my notes very closely with nature aka just intonation. I do this all the time when I play slide but since I’m playing a fretless on this recording, I can finger the adjusted notes as well.

Just because I’m using microtones, that doesn’t mean the music sounds like the greatest hits from some alien planet. Let me explain. Take the 12 notes and divide them into a 100c (cents) each. A just major third, one that sounds beautiful is 386c. An equal tempered third is 400c, 14c sharper than nature. This is usually the big problem on all guitars, the major 3rd is out of tune. The smallest interval in 72et is 16c. So, when I play a major 3rd with my slide, I flat it from ET by 16c as a guide and use my ear to tune it properly. So, most of the times, I’m probably 14c flat, but why be so specific? I just need a guide to get me there and 72et does the job.

A just minor third is 316c and an ET 3rd is 300c, 16c flat. This is why every blues guitarist bends that minor 3rd up. The so called sweet spot. Well, that sweet spot has a name, meaning a just minor 3rd, the right note. So, with my slide, I play 16c sharper than ET and I get the just minor 3rd. If you’re playing slide guitar, you can do this on a fretted guitar as well as a fretless.

So, as a guide this is how you can adjust your notes to sound sweeter. Minor 3,6 & 7 up 16c. Major 3,6 & 7 down 16c. Augmented 4 down 16c. Diminished 5 up 33c. Depending on the melody note or chord prior and following, minor 2 up 16c. Major 2 down 16c.

I do this to all scales, including the blues scale.

Here’s the link to the EP on bandcamp. Stream it with the app, or buy it for $3. That’s right a whopping $3 for 72 notes to the octave. Sounds like a deal to me.

One with new drummer, BB Webber. We're mixing right now and hope to release in August. I'm only playing cigar box guitars and it has vocals. The recording is exceeding expectations.

The second is The Legend Of John Von Bern (The Minute Sessions). I distilled my acoustic guitar instrumentals to about a minute long. It's 15 instrumentals lasting about 18 minutes. Originally, the instrumentals were about an hours worth of music. I did a video release. The video playlist is above. Please follow FKF on Bandcamp for all new releases.

INTRODUCING…FAT KNUCKLE FREDDY AT BLUE AND CAITLIN CANTY AT ONE LONGFELLOW SQUARE

Fat Knuckle Freddy

You can call him Al if you must, but Al Giusto’s moniker these days is Fat Knuckle Freddy. He adopted this name when he broke and dislocated his fretboard pinkie at the middle knuckle. Said knuckle is bigger than it should be, and it points a few degrees outward. The silver lining is that it gives him a little extra stretch on the fretboard and one hell of a clever name.

Fat Knuckle Freddy is a composer, instrumentalist and songwriter. He plays and composes primitive American music in styles he describes as “music noir” and “porch-stomping, bone-rattling blues.” He plays baritone guitar, fretless guitar, resonator guitar, Weissenborn lap steel guitar, acoustic guitar and perhaps most interestingly, three- and four-string cigar box guitars. He mostly plays slide guitar with a bottleneck and sometimes standard, finger-picking style.

But these are just words, albeit it ones that made me want to throw my headphones on immediately and get down to business with “The Torn Labrum, Bone Spur, Lazy Boy Sessions: 3 String Cigar Box Guitar Instrumentals.” And so on a recent frosty Wednesday morning I did just that and was it ever worth it. The first song was “Up & Happy” and it was a chill meditation of a song. I had no idea that a guitar made out of a cigar box and with only three strings could make such a distinct, arresting sound. But this is not Giusto’s first rodeo. His music has been on my radar since his days playing under the name Meantone, purveyor of graveyard blues. He’s got mad skills, and this Fat Knuckle Freddy project is yet another shining example. “Down & Disgusted” is a mesmerizing track that I hoped was without end. “Torn Labrum” is 11 tracks long and, as each one passed through my ears, the spell was cast deeper. Fat Knuckle Freddy’s performance at Blue is to celebrate the fact that “Torn Labrum” is ready for download on iTunes, Amazon, Pandora and Spotify. This means you can feast your ears in advance and then come out on Tuesday night to hear the tunes in the flesh, clink congratulatory glasses with Giusto and gaze upon the fat knuckle yourself.

After the operation, my lazy boy was my home. I had my digital recorder next to me and my trusty 3 String Cigar Box Guitar. I love the sound from my 3 banger aka CBG and wasn't able to play any other guitar. I recorded and mixed my first release, "The Torn Labrum, Bone Spur, Lazy Boy Sessions."

Fat Knuckle Freddy was born. It took a little over a week from start to finish. I'm currently working on a new recording. What guitar or guitars I'll use, I'm not sure yet. I'm hoping to feature my baritone guitar.

Stay out of tune.

-FKFFat Knuckle Freddy
